ProgramsProtecting WaterMichigan’s Great Lakes account for 20% of the fresh water in the world. Water plays a critical role in the quality of life among people in West Michigan and is arguably the region’s most treasured natural resource. For this reason, WMEAC has a long history of service to educate and advocate to protect West Michigan’s water resources. Restorative InstitutionsWMEAC works with diverse segments of the community to support efforts that improve our community’s triple top line, balancing traditional economic goals with social and environmental concerns. West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum Works with businesses to encourage the adoption of sustainable business practices. Greater Grand Rapids Food Systems Council Helps food entrepreneurs and consumers connect to each other in order to strengthen our local food system, enhance nutrition and preserve farms in West Michigan. Greater Grand Rapids Children?s Environmental Health Initiative A coalition of stakeholders working to reduce toxic exposures that impact children?s physical and developmental health. Michigan Inter-Faith Power & Light A local chapter of the state organization, this program helps faith groups to reduce their energy consumption and build environmental stewardship teams within their congregations. Religion, Ecology & Spirituality A group of spiritually-minded environmentalists who serve as advocates to promote the connections between ecology, religion and spirituality. Our Kitchen Table A group of women and youth who are empowering Grand Rapids’ core-city community to address environmental issues that have an every-day impact on the lives of families. Sustainable CommunitiesWMEAC’s Sustainable Communities programs focus on delivering model programs to West Michigan’s cities, townships and villages that are built around the triple top line: ecology, economy and community. |
Action ItemsGreat Lakes Great Michigan is a campaign to bring Michigan’s laws in line with the Great Lakes Compact, a regional agreement among the 8 Great Lakes States to preserve, protect and restore our Great Lakes. Take Action! Participate in the campaign at their website. Clean Kent County - Every day an estimated 1 million gallons of untreated waste from toilets and household drains is discharged from Kent County’s failing septic systems.
