Who We Are![]() West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) is a non-profit, 501C3 organization working to protect and enhance West Michigan’s natural and human environments by translating the concerns of people into positive action. WMEAC has been delivering environmental education and advocacy to the West Michigan community for nearly forty years. Since 1968, WMEAC has served as West Michigan’s leading voice for environmental protection. WMEAC is committed to empowering West Michigan’s citizens, businesses, institutions and organizations with the tools they need to become better stewards of our environment. WMEAC is located in the East Hills neighborhood in Grand Rapids. We are housed in a building that was recognized by the US Green Building Council (http://www.usgbc.org) as the first double-gold LEED certified building in the United States. Our office space serves as a demonstration site for green building practices, sustainable interior design, energy efficiency and stormwater management. Our office space has an ecological footprint 90% smaller than that of a comparable office space. We have reduced our energy consumption by 51%. Action ItemsFight for Michigan’s bright and balanced energy future! Our state’s Senators decided to pass a weak Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) last month. Their policy only demands that 7% of the state’s energy will come from renewable resources by 2015. That 7% includes coal and energy efficiency. Help us call for 10% RPS standard by 2015 with additional energy efficiency standards and NO NEW COAL! Go to www.smokestackpatty.com to hold your State Senators accountable and fight for a better RPS package. Take action now and ensure environmental protection and economic opportunity for Michigan’s future! Clean Kent County - Every day an estimated 1 million gallons of untreated waste from toilets and household drains is discharged from Kent County’s failing septic systems. Clean Kent County is a campaign to improve Kent County’s efforts to address this growing issue. To learn more or get involved contact us at info@wmeac.org. |
